Phil Hardy

Phil has over thirty years’ experience of preventing and managing angry, aggressive and violent behaviour.

A professional career in working with potentially violent service users began with HM Prison Service, as a Prison Officer and later as a Physical Education & Restraint Instructor. He later worked in secure psychiatric services designing and developing training programmes for the management of challenging and hazardous behaviours for staff working in these challenging environments.

A founder member of the ICM Phil has sat on many national development groups helping develop policies and guidance for, amongst others; the NHS, SIA, HSE, NICE, I-WHO.

Andy Baker

Andy Baker

Andy Baker has training, experience and study in psychology, child psychology, and counselling. He is a fully qualified trainer in first aid, conflict management, challenging behaviour, positive behavioural support, behavioural analysis, safeguarding, autism, adhd, child development and developmental trauma, dementia awareness, diabetes awareness, infection control, health & safety, food safety and staff development including equality and diversity, assertion skills and effective communication. Andy also has advanced trainer qualifications in physical Intervention training (breakaway and restraint) and regularly work nationwide teaching in foster care, children’s homes, schools and care homes.Andy’s clients have included members of Nottingham Social Services and County Council, Lincoln County Council, Autism Care UK, Guardian Care, Primelife, Reading Borough Council, Age Concern Norfolk and Specsavers Opticians.

Bernard Allen

Bernard Allen

Bernard Allen has substantial experience of senior management in schools and residential care over a period of twenty-five years. He has taught across all phases of education, including mainstream schools, special schools for children and young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, a further education unit for young adults with learning disabilities, a unit for children with autism and profound communication problems, and in higher education in the UK and abroad.

He led three schools for children and young people with severe behavioural, emotional and social difficulties between 1990 and 2002, to which reference was made as models of good practice in UK government sponsored research by the University of Birmingham in 1998. In recent years he has delivered training and consultancy in behaviour management and physical restraint in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta across the United Kingdom.

Gerard O'Dea

Gerard O’Dea

Gerard O’Dea is the Director of Training at Team Dynamis Ltd., providing advice and guidance in conflict management, personal safety and protective physical interventions since 2006. His clients are in the education, social care, healthcare and enforcement sectors, wherever frontline staff meet (sometimes vulnerable) people who present with difficult, distressed or dangerous behaviour. Gerard published his first book “Lone Working Personal Safety – a guidebook for health and social care staff” in 2012 and is a qualified expert witness. He is the European representative for the Vistelar Conflict Management approach and has worked with mainly Education and Healthcare clients across the UK and Ireland, UAE, Qatar, Turkey and Spain. In 2020 he was selected by Loughborough University to consult on the College of Policing upgrade to the OST (now PPST) Trainer development syllabus, based on extensive experience in evidence-based approaches to training which are Scenario-Driven (SCENA).

Andy Manwaring

Andy Manwaring

Andy has been a part time College Lecturer and External Quality Assurer for an Awarding Organisation. His training experience began during his 12 years service with the Territorial Army (1984-1996). He later went on to work and teach in the security industry. Andy has been part of the curriculum development team for ‘First Aid in schools’ (for Lancashire County Council) and the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) First Aid qualifications. He has also trained trainers for the CIEH.As well as teaching Physical Intervention (PI) for the Security Industry, Andy has helped the Lancashire County Councils Learning Disability Training Team and G4S (Children Services) develop their own PI Model and be Accredited by BILD.Andy has an 8th Dan in the Martial Art of Ju-Jitsu, which he teaches at his own club in Morecambe Lancashire, as well as a guest instructer at clubs around the UK, Europe and as far abroad as Russia and the USA.

Trevel Henry

Trevel Henry

Trevel has been actively involved as an Expert Witness since 2001 and a Training Consultant in the prevention, management and resolution of challenging, aggressive and violent behaviour since 1994.

As an expert witness Trevel provides advice, support and guidance to solicitors, awarding bodies, companies and individuals relating to the use of force, physical interventions and the use of personal protective equipment. He continues to be instructed in cases involving restraint related deaths, personal injuries, allegations of excessive use of force and inappropriate use of techniques. The cases he has reported on involve the Police Service, Prison & Probation Services, Police Scotland, Scottish Prison Service, Security Industry Authority, Home Office, Young Offenders Secure Institutions, Independent Office for Police Complaints (IOPC), Local Government, Health & Social Care and other work industries and sectors. During his professional career Trevel has delivered training, presentations, workshops to a range of operational staff, support staff, and management teams across the UK, Europe, South Africa, Canada, USA and the Caribbean.

Steven Black

Steven specialises in Surveillance, Close Protection , Asseset Protection, Residential Security,Security Guarding, Door Supervision and Martial Arts.Riscon , has been in the Security Industry for over 7 years and has a proven track record when it comes to delivering Close Protection , Residential Security and Surveillance to prospective Clients.Riscon have also delivered various Self Defence Courses to Goverment Agencies, Lone Workers through to people who feel vulnerable. All our Instructors are highly trained and hold current and up to date teaching qualifications, these qualifucations can be delivered anywhere in the UK and abroad.

Doug Melia

Doug Melia

Doug Melia is an international use of force and reducing restrictive practices specialist, with particular expertise in soft restraint equipment and the safe use of work equipment and PPE. He is an Edexcel qualified physical restraint and breakaway consultant and trainer, and holds the Cardiff University Bond Solon Certificate for Expert Witnesses.

His work includes audits of training systems for insurance and litigation, investigations into the management of violence and aggression, support with school positive handling policies and safe systems of work, and use of force consultations. He presents the series ‘They Lie!’.

Doug is a stakeholder of NICE, a Restraint Reduction Network member and pledge holder, and a member of IOSH, NAPICU and the International Corrections and Prisons Association.

James Crown

James Crown

James Crown is Training Director at IKON Training, where he helps organisations keep people safe through conflict resolution and managing challenging behaviour training.

He works with NHS trusts and other organisations, supporting their in-house personal safety trainers, and writes and speaks regularly about what happens after an incident, including post-incident support, learning and recovery for staff.
